Glossary

Auto responder

Preset message that instantly replies to all incoming mail.

Automated Spider Engines

Engines which deploy an automated program to visit and retrieve data from your site.

Bandwidth

The amount of data that has been transferred between your website and your visitors.

Browser

A Client application used to look at various kinds of Internet resources (i.e. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox).

CGI (Common Gateway Interface)

A set of rules that describe how a Web Server communicates with another application on the same machine; and how the other application talks to the web server.

Cgi-bin

A directory on a web server in which CGI programs are stored.

Cookie

A piece of information (i.e. login information or user preferences) sent by a Web Server to a browser to save.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

A flexible, powerful code for laying out and formatting web pages.

E-Commerce

The processes of selling online, via a website.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

This protocol allows you to upload and download files from or to a server or computer host.

Host

A computer on a network that is a storeroom for services available to other computers on the network.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language)

The coding language used to create pages for use on the World Wide Web.

JavaScript

A programming language used in web pages, to add interactivity (i.e. provide the current date).

Keywords

Words used to describe a site and to find the site using "searches".

Keyword Search

A search made by keying a keyword or phrase into a search box on a search engine, directory or portal.

Keyword Search Frequency

Number of search requests for particular keyword.

Link Popularity

A method used by search engines to determine the importance of a listed site. Based on the idea that sites with many inbound links is more credible.

Mail reflector

A mail address that automatically forwards any mail to another address.

Mailbox

The directory on a host computer where your email messages are stored.

Meta Tag

HTML coding to provide spiders with keyword information.

POP (Point of Presence, also Post Office Protocol)

Point of Presence is a location where a network can be connected to. Post Office Protocol refers to a way that e-mail client application gets mail from a mail server. POP3 is the most common type of email account.

Rank

The position attained on the Search Engines and Directories.

Registry

A company that registers your domian name for you.

Search Engine

A system for searching the information available on the web. The engine provides a list of useful links in response to a text query.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

A crucial element of online marketing - the process of adapting web pages to maximise their effectiveness at matching common search phrases on search engines.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)

The main protocol used to send electronic mail from server to server on the Internet.

Spam

Unsolicited, irrelevant or inappropriate email. Also a general term relating to practices not approved by the search engines and directory editors.

SQL (Structured Query Language)

A specialized language for sending queries to databases.

Upload

To move data from a local computer to a remote computer (send data to another computer).

URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

The address for resources available on the Internet.
