Web users enter various words when they search for your business, service or products online. These words are called keywords. Search engines use the keywords to decide which web pages to deliver in the results pages. That’s why keywords are crucial to your website!
There are 3 key steps in adding keywords to your website
1. Keyword Research
First you must find out which words and phrases your
potential customers use online to search. Search words and phrases are not random - they are influenced
subconsciously by our language and culture.
Get EVERYONE in your company involved in pooling
together keyword suggestions based solely your knowledge of
the products and services. Every
suggestion should be included (regardless of crazy
they may seem).
Market research is beneficial to include clients / customers in the
keyword brainstorming process.
We also recommend using keyword tools such as google and wordtracker to help you find keywords relevant to your business.
To get you started try a list that includes:
- Singular and/or plural versions of your product/service
- Location, location, location
- Misspelling (is there a common misspelling of your product or service)
2. Keyword analysis and strategy
Your keyword research will return THOUSANDS of keywords results. You cant
possibly use all the keywords on your website... so you need to analyze
and prioritize them.
You need to list of your keywords in order of importance, in groups
corresponding to your target markets.
Be specific. As Google says "If you're selling roses, use specific keywords like buy red roses instead of general keywords like flowers. Someone searching for flowers could be looking for any kind of flower, and for many different reasons. Keywords like red rose delivery or long-stemmed roses will get you better results."
3. Keyword rich content
Now you have a list of all the keywords for your website you need to refine it even further! For each content page make a list of under 20 keywords. You will get the BEST results with a FEW well-chosen keywords for each page.
Edit or rewrite the content on each page based on the chosen keywords. Make sure the keywords appear in headings, paragraphs, page titles and links.
Don't just repeat the words over and over again. Actually work them into the text in a relevant manner. The key is to refocus the content - for both search engines and your web visitors.
