Top 10 e-newsletter tips

Get better results with your enews campaign using these tips. Be sure to review them before you send your next email campaign.

E-marketing is an affordable way to draw traffic to your website, sell your products and remind customers to come back and visit you. So make your e-newsletter work hard for your business with these top 10 tips.

1. Read the newspaper - keep your e-newsletter topical.

2. Test and review versions.

See which newsletters delivered the action you wanted - the most conversions, the highest average sale per order, the highest click-through rate, etc. Try sending out two different versions of your e-newsletter to small samples of your list with different subject lines, different copy etc. Track the open and click-through rates of each version to see which does better, and then send the more successful version to the rest of your list.

3. Make the subject line count.

4. Open rates don’t always measure success.

Remember, your end goal is not necessarily high open rates, but to have subscribers take a specific action. Focus on your end goal.

5. Personalize it based on users product or content preferences.

6. Urgency drives action.

Use urgency as part of a series of emails. For example on Monday “5 Days Left…” and then on Thursday follow it with “Only 24 Hours….”.

7. Make it short & scannable.

Many e-newsletters are too long. Headlines should be short and catchy. Use “Read More” links after a brief blurb on the topic you are highlighting to draw users to your website.

8. Get interactive, ask users to take a poll or share a story.

9. Segment your subscribers and tailor different versions of your e-newsletter for each segment.

10. Encourage users to forward to your newsletter to friends and make it easy for new readers to subscribe on your website.
