What is a domain name and why should I have one?
A
domain name is the unique name by which a website is identified on the
Internet, such as yourbusiness.com.au. Ownership of a domain name that matches your business name is essential.
Why would I register multiple domain names for my website?
You may want to register the .com.au,
.net and .net.au versions of your domain name to secure your brand on the web.
If
you are planning on promoting your website abroad also look into domains such as .com (US), .co.uk (UK), co.nz
(NZ), or .cn (China) etc.
Choosing the right domain name weighs heavily
on the minds of many people just starting an online business or making
their first foray into the digital world. Should I buy .com or .com.au,
or both? How do I choose the best
domain name for my online business? And what should I do if the one I
want isn’t available?
In Australia, .com.au is king. Most customers will assume your domain name is .com.au not .com or .net.au
What makes a good domain name?
Would someone remember your domain if they saw it on a
billboard or heard on the radio?
Keep it short and simple. NO hyphens.
Like us if you have a number register it both ways - j6design.com.au and jsixdesign.com.au - and also register the plural if you can - j6designs.com.au - we take the guess work out of it.
What happens if your domain name is taken?
You have 2 main options: find an alternative or buy it from the existing owner.
Registering the .net.au because the .com.au is taken is risky. Most customers will go to the .com.au first or assume that is your domain name.
Choosing a more tightly defined domain name can improve search engine rankings. IE adelaidewebdesigner.com.au and burleighheadswebdesign.com.au - it has our keywords.
Just because someone else owns the domain name, don’t assume it is
unavailable.
Until 2008, it was illegal under Australian Domain Name Administrator (auDA) policy to
resell .au domain names. But the rules have changed so owners of .au domain names can resell them after owning them for six moths.
Are there any restrictions on buying a domain name?
To
own a .com.au or .net.au you must be an Australian registered company,
or business with a registered business number (ABN, BRN, BN).The domain name must be either an exact match, acronym or abbreviation of the supplied business
registration, or it should bear a close and substantial connection to
the domain name.
To own a .org.au your organisation must be a "non-commercial organisation". The domain name must have a solid relationship to the organisation to which it represents.
Anyone can buy a .com or .net domain name as long as you're not infringing trademark or copyright laws.
