Copywriting mistakes - don't use the word welcome

Web copywriting mistakes - why not to have a welcome line

Welcome phrases are a waste of your web visitors time. Your whole site should express the welcome feeling. Lets look at the why its a NO-NO and how to fix it.

"It is our pleasure to welcome you to our website”

A welcome line is a formal statement that doesn't actually make your web visitor feel welcome!

Generally, if you have to say the word "welcome" in your opening line, it's not a good sign. Infact at that point, we would generally say stop writing and hire a copywriter right now!

Customer service is really important and should be expressed through your website text in a tone that provides that warm friendly welcome to your customers.

If someone walks into your office you say...

"Good morning/afternoon, how can we help you today". Your office has a friendly, welcoming feel, your body language is positive and you have a big smile on your face.

Your customer feels welcome - but at no stage did you say the word welcome or give a formal welcome line.

Your website needs to function in the same way. The welcome is portrayed by the overall feeling of the web design, the friendly tone of the text, the happy smiling faces on photos and in the clear direction provided to visitors through links.

You have just 7 seconds to impress them - don't waste a single one.

People on the internet want you to get directly to the point. They are browsing fast through websites and want to know:

  • WHO you are,
  • WHAT your service / product is,
  • WHY you are better,
  • and HOW they can find out more.
...and they want it delivered to them in a concise, friendly manner.

The first line of text on your home page is the most important for grabbing your visitors attention and creating interest for them to read on. Polite and friendly is nice, but don't waste your most important space on a welcome line. Keep the tone right and its a hidden message they will receive loud and clear.

So where can you put that welcome line?

If you feel you have to add the welcome words, we recommend you add it your about us page, where you introduce who you are. It can be part of the opening paragraph or in a quote from the managing director.
